When the Earth Shakes, God Remains

Scripture Reading: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed.” – Psalms 46:1-2

Brothers and sisters in Christ, recent earthquakes and calamities remind us of one important truth: life in this world is uncertain. In just a few seconds, the ground can shake, homes can be damaged, plans can be changed, and hearts can be filled with fear.

But while the earth may shake, our God remains unshaken.

As Seventh-day Adventists, we do not look at calamities with fear alone. We look at them with spiritual eyes. Jesus told us in Matthew 24 that earthquakes, disasters, and troubles would be among the signs reminding us that this world is not our permanent home. These events are not given to make us panic, but to awaken us—to prepare our hearts, strengthen our faith, and renew our commitment to God.

When calamities come, we are reminded of three important things.

First, we are reminded to trust God. Psalm 46 tells us that God is our refuge. A refuge is a place of safety. When people are afraid, when families are grieving, and when communities are suffering, God invites us to run to Him. He may not always stop the shaking of the earth, but He can calm the shaking of the heart.

Second, we are reminded to prepare. Preparation is not a lack of faith; it is an act of wisdom. We prepare our homes, our families, and our emergency needs. But above all, we prepare our souls. The greatest preparation is not only having supplies ready, but having our hearts ready for the soon return of Jesus.

Third, we are reminded to serve others. In times of calamity, the church must become the hands and feet of Christ. We are called to pray, comfort, give, encourage, and help those who are suffering. Our faith must not remain only in words. It must be seen in compassion, kindness, and action.

Brothers and sisters, the recent calamities are a serious reminder that this world is fragile. But we have hope. Jesus is coming again. One day, there will be no more earthquakes, no more floods, no more tears, no more death, and no more pain. God will make all things new.

So today, let us not live in fear. Let us live in faith. Let us pray for those affected. Let us help where we can. Let us prepare our families. And most of all, let us prepare our hearts.

Though the earth may shake, God’s promises stand firm. Though calamities may come, Jesus remains our refuge. And though this world is troubled, our hope is in the soon coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Appeal:
Let us draw closer to God today. Let us surrender our fears to Him, strengthen our faith, and be ready—not only for emergencies in this life, but for the glorious return of Jesus.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come to You in humility and faith. We pray for all those affected by earthquakes and calamities. Comfort the grieving, heal the injured, protect the rescuers, and provide for every family in need. Help us to trust You, prepare wisely, and serve others with love. Keep our hearts faithful and ready for the soon return of Jesus. In His name, Amen.
